Tilicho Trek

Day 1

Kathmandu-Besisahar-Bubule

7 hours drive to Besishar, From Besi Sahar the trail descends sharply then climbs steeply through the deep gorge. It moves up and down through fields, tropical forest and small hamlets to Khudi at 845m, the first Gurung village. Most people are Brahmin or Chettri with a few Gurung villages. Northwards up the Marsyangdi valley cross over a suspension bridge to Bulbule.

Day 2

Bulbule to Jagat

Good views of Manaslu and Ngadi Chuli. Ngadi is a small settlement with a mix of people. Corss over a very high suspension bridge over the Ngadi River and then walk gradually uphill about 1 and ½ hours to get Bahundanda. Following the trail marked signs, descend to a stream along a steep, slippery trail then pass a huge landslide area to Khane at 1180m. the track then climbs gradually except where necessary to cross steep ridges till suddenly the valley opens on to a wide plateau. We then again cross the Suspension bridge at Syange on Marshyangdi River and right turn along the Marsyangdi river bank and gradually uphill to Jagat.

Day 3

Trek to Dharapani

The trail continues to zigzag along with Marsyangdi river views. After crossing another suspension bridge over the river, the trail goes uphill and gradually up to get to Taal. Taal is a famous place for stunning valley views and water falls. You will have to take lunch break here in Taal with the water fall scenery. After lunch we continue to Dharapani, passing several local villages and crossing over the Marsyangdi river 5 times.

Day 4

Trek to Chame

The trail is rocky and rough but suddenly a broad level stretch appears. There is a fine wooden bridge near a waterfall and outstanding stone work supports the trail. Tyangja, also known as Lattamanang appears at 2360m. The track stays near Marsyangdi in forests of oak and maple trees, climbing and descending between water worn boulders to cross a large stream into Kyupar.

Day 5

Trek to Lower Pisang

The next village is Chame at 2630m, HeadQuarters of the regional administration with good views of Lamjung and Annapurnas II and IV. From here we cross a stream and then the Marsyangdi itself on a large suspension bridge and continue up the north side of the river to Talung. Later we walk through apple orchards to Bratang, a now largely abandoned Khampa settlement. Return to the trail across the bridge and follow the new trail that has been blasted out of the cliff face through a narrow and steep valley. Pass through deep forest then cross to the south side of the river on a long suspension bridge at 3040m. There is a dramatic first view of the Paungda Danda rock face rising 1500m from the river. Over a ridge marked by prayer flags and stone cairn, continue the steep ascent to the upper Marsyangdi. The lower sections of Pisang appear as a cluster of homes with a long Mani wall

Day 6

Trek to Manang

A short distance beyond Pisang, the trail climbs a steep ridge on the right side of the Marsyangdi River to get Ngawal monastry, one of the really great viewing point of the whole Annapurna Ridge and the Marsyangdi river valley.

Day 7

Trek to Tilicho base camp

From Manang we follow the path down to the river. After we cross the river we continue on the south side of it through coniferous forest towards Khangsar. One section is across a steep and exposed slope. Crossing the Khangsar Khola on the bridge below Khangsar we then ascend the slope to the village. Continue from Khangsar on a large path. The route ahead goes on a recently constructed path up towards a high ridge. At one point is an intersection. One path maintains the altitude, traversing the slopes towards a place where the valley is narrow, the other continues to ascend towards the line of the ridge. We continue along the new path, reach a high crest, and descend on switch backs carved out through the scree slopes to a side valley of the main valley. At its bottom is a brook. On the other side of it is a building known as Tilicho Base Camp.

Day 8

Trek to Tilicho lake

Continues up along moraine ridges and grassy slopes to some large switch backs carved out of the slope. Reach the watershed. On the other side is Tilicho Lake. Camp sites are found on its north eastern shore. To go this far is rather uncomplicated. The route ahead is more far more complicated and demanding. There are two ways ahead. One may cross the glaciers that come down from Tilicho Himal. To take this path we need ice climbing gear, and the competence to use it. This should only be attempted when the glacier is bare so all crevasses are visible. The second way traverses three minor passes in the mountains north of the lake. Many regard Tilcho Lake as the highest lake in the world, which is a holy lake due to Guru Ringpuche bathing place so, normally every year Pilligrimage festival in August.

Day 9

Trek toward Jomsom.

Day 10

Trek to Jomson

Day 11

Fly back (Jomsom –Pokhara –Kathmandu)
